Abstract

Defining platforms has been a contentious issue. To maintain broad coverage of the topic, a very general definition possible will be used: A platform is an intermediary that facilitates interaction between users who either (i) are explicitly affiliated with that intermediary or (ii) develop new or improved functionality (innovate) for the platform using a shared technological standard provided by the intermediary. A platform facilitating interaction means that it generates salient relationships between participants rather than just providing goods or service. This relationship cannotbe at arm’s length. A factory facilitates “interactions” between workers and customers – workers make and customers buy – but there is no salient relationship between the two.
