The Sharing Economy And The Future Of Energy

Abstract

There has been a notable shift in how individuals around the world view consumption and the owership of goods and services. In the past, consumption in a capitalist system has primarily meant that one purchases a good or a service directly from another entity in the market by means of a private transaction. This view of the world has been complicated by the rise of technology (and, in particular, social media), which has created a strong desire for social relevance and communal consumption (Hamari et al. 2016).Exchanges of goods and services are increasingly more intermediated, and, in fact, the very notion of “private goods”is slowly vanishing. Specifically, individuals are becoming more interested in participating in sharing economies or in the act of collaborative consumption.
